Community Resource Liaison:
In addition to the other services I can provide, I am also here to help families in crisis or in need of outside referrals to services in the community. These services could vary from referring families for income assistance to referring a child to counselor in their community to further work on their needs outside of school (and everything in-between). One important website that families should be aware of to find a list of services and numbers to call is the United Way. You can simply call 211 for a complete list of resources or you can: Click Here for Berrien County Resources or Click Here to access any counties' resources |
Social GroupsSome students, who are identified by teachers and other staff may be placed into a therapeutic social group to work on individual social/emotional goals with their peers who are struggling in a similar area. Topics may include (but are not limited to) anger management, self-esteem, peer relationships, and understanding feelings.
For students who would not benefit from meeting in a group with peers but also require aid in reaching their social/emotional goals will meet with me on an individual basis for psycho-education and crisis intervention sessions. These sessions should not be confused or substituted for in-depth psychotherapy that a child may need in an outside agency. |
Peer to PeerOne of the many "hats" I wear in my position at Sylvester is the leader of our building peer to peer program. This is an evidence based program where students mentor other students. All of the mentors are trained on their "mentees'" individual needs (behavior, academics, social, etc) before they begin working with them. Oftentimes in schools, we forget some of the best teachers in the buildings are the students themselves, so this program allows them a space to share their skills with other students.

Behavior ConsultationA large part of my job is to help the teachers help your child since I cannot follow each student around all day. We work together to come up with some possible solutions to meet the needs of any child that is identified as needing extra behavioral supports. I am also one of the team members that completes Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavioral Intervention Plans for students who might need even more added support to be successful in school.
I am also a member and leader of our Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) team. As a team, we work on how to make the school as conducive to positive behavior and learning as possible. |
